Oscar Predictions: Actress
Actress Nominations: Marion Cotillard (La Vie En Rose), Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth: The Golden Age), Julie Christie (Away From Her), Ellen Page (Juno), Laura Linney (The Savages)
This one has been blown wide open after the BAFTA victory for Marion Cotillard. Her performance is unstoppable but perhaps could be a little overly showy given the rest of the line-up. Christie is elegantly touching and deserves the praise she’s been getting in an underrated film. Page is sparky, intelligent and funny but she just isn’t quite big enough in the role to take it on. Similar with Laura Linney, perennially the bridesmaid at the Oscars but as always, excellent.
Blanchett is a no hoper due to the two nods and also the crapness of the film. Her nomination is pretty much a token gift for being a quality general actress but so many more deserving lost out unfairly, most notably Angelina Jolie for A Mighty Heart.
